The Hei Toki: A Symbol of Strength & Purpose
The hei toki originates from the traditional toki (adze) — a tool once used by Māori for carving, building, and shaping the world around them. As a pendant, it represents strength, determination, courage, and the ability to overcome challenges with clarity and purpose. It is often worn by those who lead, create, or carry responsibility for others.
Raukaraka Pounamu — A Stone of Earth & Light
This pendant is carved from Raukaraka pounamu, a rare and highly prized variety known for its warm olive‑green tones, golden inclusions, and soft, luminous gradients. Raukaraka is found in the Marsden region of Te Wai Pounamu, an area renowned for producing some of Aotearoa’s most beautiful and culturally significant pounamu.
The stone’s natural colour shifts — from deep moss greens to sunlit amber — symbolise growth, renewal, and the balance between strength and serenity.
Carved by Alex Sands
This toki has been hand‑carved by Alex Sands, a respected New Zealand artist known for his refined craftsmanship and deep connection to traditional Māori design. His work is recognised for its clean lines, balanced proportions, and the way each piece honours the mauri (life force) of the stone.
